Superintendent's Student of the Month

Superintendent's
Student of the Month
    Akila Young

Akila Young is the Superintendent‘s Student of the Month.  She is the daughter of Gary and Pam Young of Eatonton.  Akila is an exceptional young person and an outstanding student. She is very dedicated to her education as can be seen with her continued higher level of academic performance each year of high school. She is very motivated and possesses great discipline. She is very dependable and giving of herself and time. Akila is the 2012 PCHS STAR Student and the Putnam County STAR Student which means she  had the highest SAT score of all seniors, public and private, in Putnam County. Akila Young is the Valedictorian for the PCHS Class of 2012.

Akila spent her first two years of high school on the PCHS campus. At the end of her sophomore year, she was accepted to The Advanced Academy of Georgia, a full-time residential early entrance to college program for highly gifted and motivated high school age students. She was dually enrolled in The Advanced Academy at the University of West Georgia and living in an academic residence hall on campus where she took university classes with traditional university students. Advanced Academy students take upper division courses along with core curriculum and usually complete at least one college honors level course each semester.

Akila thrived at the Advanced Academy. She displayed great leadership skills and was involved in many extracurricular activities while continuing to push herself academically. She was an Advanced Academy Ambassador and worked extremely hard to be named as Ambassador of the Year. She was president of the Gunn residence hall council and co-founder of Gunn Girls for God. Gunn Girls for God is a peer lead support group designed to develop and promote self esteem and self awareness in girls. She participated in student life at the University of West Georgia as a member of intramural soccer and ultimate Frisbee teams. Akila spends a great amount of time volunteering through tutoring of adults seeking their GED, working with "Not So Scary Fairy Tales," and volunteering at the local food bank and Rivers Alive on a regular basis. She also helped organize and participate in canned food drives and March of Dimes.

Her principal, Barry Lollis said, “Akila is an extremely well rounded young woman and by far one of the most intelligent and determined students with whom I have ever had the good fortune to serve as an educator. She is a wonderful young person with enormous promise."

Akila plans to enter the University of Georgia in the fall.
